Robotic Remote Mitigation
Drone Amplified has secured a landmark FAA approval for its MONTIS avalanche control drone, providing a clear legal framework for commercial deployment across the United States. The Nebraska-based company, known for its IGNIS aerial ignition systems used in wildfire management, developed MONTIS to remove personnel from hazardous avalanche paths. The system allows crews to remotely trigger controlled slides from a safe distance, integrating field-proven explosive technology from partners Austin Powder and CIL Avalanche.
Operational Safety
Traditional avalanche mitigation relies on manned helicopters, artillery, or ground crews. The MONTIS platform offers a strategic supplement or alternative, reducing crew exposure while maintaining high precision. According to CEO Carrick Detweiler, the approval marks a significant milestone in using robotics to make dangerous jobs safer. The company worked closely with the Alaska Department of Transportation to ensure the system solves real-world operational challenges in extreme environments.
Key Features
MONTIS integrates specialized hardware with intuitive flight software to ensure reliability. The system is designed to fill the gap between ground-based mitigation and expensive helicopter operations. With the FAA pathway now established, ski resorts and transportation departments can legally adopt drone-based remote avalanche mitigation systems (RAMS) to protect infrastructure and communities with reduced operational risk.
