Beam Global Acquires ScoutDI for $24M to Scale Tethered Confined-Space Inspection Drones

Beam Global (Nasdaq: BEEM) has executed a definitive share purchase agreement to acquire Norwegian drone developer ScoutDI AS for approximately $24 million in cash, common stock, and earn-out incentives. The transaction transitions ScoutDI’s tethered indoor inspection architecture into Beam’s domestic and European manufacturing facilities, positioning the combined entity to capture industrial and defense inspection demand under tightening supply-chain regulations.

Tethered Architecture and Sensor Integration

Confined-space inspection in heavy industry has historically presented an operational trade-off between human hazard and robotic endurance. Standard multirotors operating inside metal-enclosed, GPS-denied environments face severe battery mass constraints, multipath signal degradation, and turbulent aerodynamic recirculation.

ScoutDI addresses these limitations with the Scout 137 Gen 3, a 3 kg multirotor powered continuously through a reinforced micro-tether. The tether delivers uninterrupted power from an external ground station while maintaining an isolated, hardwired gigabit data conduit resistant to radio frequency interference and physical obstruction.

Key technical specifications of the Scout 137 platform include:

  • Compute Architecture: Onboard NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX edge module processing simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms in real time without external satellite positioning.
  • LiDAR Integration: 128-beam Ouster OS0 solid-state LiDAR sensor providing 360-degree spatial mapping at ranges up to 75 meters.
  • Visual Payloads: 4K stabilized optical sensor supported by integrated 12,000-lumen structured LED illumination arrays configured to eliminate shadow distortion in dark enclosures.
  • Non-Destructive Testing: Integrated ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) payload capable of physical surface contact to determine structural metal thinning across storage tanks, ship hulls, and pipe walls.
  • Airframe Geometry: Compact 448 x 479 x 262 mm envelope capable of passing through standard 600 mm circular industrial manways.

Defense Clearance and Nuclear Sector Deployment

Regulatory acceptance remains a critical hurdle for autonomous inspection hardware. The Scout 137 Gen 3 was the first European drone system, and among the first four platforms globally, to secure Conditional Approval from the U.S. Department of Defense under the Defense Innovation Unit framework. The platform’s reporting pipelines comply with non-destructive examination standards recognized by DNV, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd’s Register, ABS, and the American Petroleum Institute.

ScoutDI recently recorded an initial procurement milestone within the commercial nuclear sector, deploying Scout 137 units for reactor containment and cooling infrastructure evaluations where radiation exposure and confined geometry preclude manned inspections. Existing commercial deployments span energy and maritime operators including ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, Equinor, Petrobras, and Ørsted.

Manufacturing Relocation and Market Outlook

Under the terms of the agreement, Beam Global plans to localize volume manufacturing of ScoutDI airframes at its existing production facilities in the United States and Europe. The acquisition structure includes performance earn-out milestones through 2027 tied to revenue targets exceeding 150% and 160% of baseline 2025 levels.

By domesticating hardware production, Beam aims to meet National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) procurement compliance mandates across federal and critical infrastructure contracts while scaling ScoutDI’s recurring software analytics subscription, Scout Portal. The transaction is scheduled to close in November 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.
