HyLight Raises €13M to Industrialize Autonomous Hydrogen Airships for Infrastructure Inspection

French aerospace deeptech startup HyLight has secured €13 million ($14.2 million) in Series A funding to scale production of its autonomous, hydrogen-powered airships. The investment round was led by Rubio Impact Ventures, DRW, and Teampact Ventures, with follow-on participation from Y Combinator and Ring Capital. The capital injection will fund the industrialization of HyLight’s manufacturing base at Air Base 217 in Brétigny-sur-Orge, enabling the company to expand its operational fleet from four to 15 aircraft by 2027.

Aerostatic Buoyancy and Hydrogen Propulsion Architecture

HyLight’s flagship platform, the 12-meter HyLighter, bridges the endurance limitations of battery-powered multirotors and the extreme operating expense of crewed inspection helicopters. The aircraft employs helium for aerostatic lift, significantly reducing power demand required to maintain altitude. Forward and directional propulsion is supplied by electric thrusters driven by an onboard hydrogen fuel cell system.

This hybrid aerostatic architecture yields continuous operational endurance of up to 10 hours with zero direct carbon emissions and minimal acoustic signature. The platform achieves a target single-mission range of 350 kilometers (217 miles), allowing continuous corridor surveillance across high-voltage transmission lines, rail corridors, and pipelines. In September alone, HyLight aircraft logged nearly 3,000 kilometers of inspection flights across European infrastructure networks.

Sensor Integration and Predictive Infrastructure Intelligence

Operating at typical mission altitudes of 25 meters directly above infrastructure corridors, the HyLighter carries sensor payloads weighing up to 10 kilograms. Supported sensor packages include:

  • High-Density LiDAR: Point densities exceeding 1,000 points per square meter for precise structural clearance and vegetation encroachment mapping.
  • Sub-Millimeter Optical Payloads: High-resolution optical sensors delivering 1 mm per pixel ground sample distance to isolate minute component wear and fastener fatigue.
  • Gas Detection Systems: Tunable diode laser absorption spectrometers for real-time methane leak detection along natural gas pipeline corridors.

Sensor telemetry is processed through an automated edge and cloud analytics pipeline capable of identifying and geolocating more than 50 distinct grid component defects. Repeated sorties feed continuous point-cloud updates into high-definition digital twins, providing utility operators with predictive maintenance models before structural anomalies cause catastrophic failures.

Regulatory Authorizations and Commercial Scaling

HyLight operates under beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) regulatory approvals coordinated through the French Directorate General for Civil Aviation (DGAC) within the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) framework. The lighter-than-air design inherently reduces ground risk profiles compared to heavy fixed-wing or rotary UAVs, allowing flight authorizations over populated areas, industrial facilities, and historic sites.

Missions are managed centrally from HyLight’s remote operations center in Paris via redundant RF, cellular LTE, and satellite datalinks. The company currently provides turnkey data services to European infrastructure operators including Enedis, NaTran, Téréga, SNCF Réseau, and VINCI. The new capital will support hiring 50 engineers and operations specialists while accelerating commercial expansion into Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
