The boundary between commercial logistics and military hardware just became a shared airframe. Archer Aviation and Anduril Industries have unveiled a dual-use autonomous VTOL platform, branded as Halo for the commercial sector and Thunder for the defense market. It is a calculated move to scale production while satisfying two very different masters.
One Airframe, Two Missions
The platform is a clean-sheet design that builds on Archer’s eight years of eVTOL development. Both variants share a series hybrid-electric powertrain and dual optimum-speed tiltrotors. By varying rotor RPM, the aircraft maintains efficiency in cruise and minimizes its acoustic signature. This is useful for suburban delivery hubs and essential for low-altitude ingress in contested environments.
The hybrid system provides the range necessary for global self-deployment. When that is not feasible, the entire aircraft is engineered to fit into a standard shipping container. It is a logistical simplicity that few platforms in this weight class can claim.
The Defense Variant: Thunder
Anduril’s Thunder is a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft. It is designed to act as a force multiplier for crewed platforms like the AH-64 Apache. The payload capacity is significant: the internal bays can host ten air-to-ground missiles, sixteen loitering munitions, or over seventy 70mm rockets. It is built to operate in the “robotic kill zone” of the near-surface domain, where human pilots face increasing risk from cheap air defenses and persistent ISR.
The Commercial Variant: Halo
Halo targets heavy-lift logistics. Launch partner Marubeni Aerospace is looking at offshore energy resupply and time-sensitive freight. By removing the pilot, Archer eliminates the primary cost and scheduling constraint of modern aviation. The aircraft moves heavy payloads over long distances at a fraction of current costs, utilizing the manufacturing scale Archer developed with Stellantis.
This collaboration proves that the most sophisticated vertical lift technology is no longer coming from traditional defense primes. It is coming from those who can build at the speed of software and the scale of the automotive industry.
